It's a free ferry service run bynthe government. Carries around 50 vehicles. The trip takes around 20 minutes each way.

Very impressed by how clean the ferry was kept. They do have waiting rooms on either side. Even the ferry has nice resting areas, both covered and outside.

Good ferry experience. $12 Canadian debit/credit/cash or $12 USD. Conversion rate is bad, don’t do that. We didn’t sink. Car is okay. Would ride again. Kinda scenic. A regular boat would cost way more money. Don’t forget passport.

Walpole–Algonac Ferry Review 🚗⛴️

If you're looking for a low-key border crossing, the Walpole–Algonac ferry offers a laid-back alternative to the busier ports. When we arrived, the terminal was quiet—no staff in sight at first—but a Canadian border agent showed up about 15 minutes later, just before the ferry arrived from the U.S.

Roughly seven cars offloaded, and we were waved aboard with one other vehicle. The fare was $15 CAD for a quick, peaceful 10-minute ride across the river. Customs on the U.S. side took less than five minutes—smooth and efficient.

This route might not have the bells and whistles of larger crossings, but it’s fast, calm, and ideal if you’re craving simplicity without the gridlock. Just plan for a bit of patience when you arrive.

Don’t try to find without a GPS. The crossing was easy, efficient processing going either way. Might have a wait up to 30 minutes if you just miss the boat. Friendly staff helpful and smiling. Customs isn’t as busy as many places. Just a lot of surface streets and convoluted directions. Worth it for the experience.

We crossed at about 3:00 pm on an Friday afternoon from Canada into the USA and I thought we would have a lengthy wait. But it was less than an hour to cross here including our time with the USA customs officer. I won’t lie, this was a total blast! You can even get out of your car and take some pictures. If you have never been on a ferry, definitely, this is fun to do! It’s $12.00 Canadian to cross over and during the process of crossing the St Claire River we got to see this luxury yacht. (Would love to ride on one of those, one day!) I was a little nervous and uncomfortable about HOW to do this…where to park to wait, how to drive on and park, etc but the staff was amazing! Friendly and patient. They give you clear and kindly directions. It melted all my anxiety away! Kudos to the ferry staff, they were amazing!

I'd never ever heard of this gem! Our friend who was the navigator/driver checked the Blue Water Bridge traffic and we decided to NOT GO THERE. A billion semis lined up coming into the US. We were on "old people time" so we went the long way! We had to wait a half hour or so (missed the boat!) but it was soooo pleasant. Then we wandered on to Harsens Island for dinner. ( Read: another ferry)
