When we purchased the family cottage and decided to make it our own, the best choice we made was to hire Chantale Charette of Studio 853 to bring our modern new wants and our cottage legacy together. Without changing the cottage footprint, Chantale was creative with space and captured our calm and outdoorsy aesthetic beautifully by communicating efficiently and listening actively. Chantale got to know us - our family - and how we wish to use the cottage going forward.

A shiny new cottage resembling a generic show home, devoid of character and place, wasn’t our vibe. Chantale was very sympathetic and took cues from the property to ensure the landscape we love was reflected back inside.

Chantale thoughtfully had an oversized window placed behind a beautiful downdraft oven, capturing the rocky view of our little bit of Canadian Shield - a view that is simply a integral part of our property not seen from the inside before. Chantale also ensured the kitchen opened up to lake views from every work surface.

The choice of wide plank white oak wood flooring set the tone for the cottage and grounded the use of dark and light paint colours, natural woods, black metal, grey concrete and glass throughout. The layers of incredible texture that resulted are pure warmth. Chantal's thoughtful choices for lighting and tile - mixing rustic and modern - was unexpected but added such style. Leaving choices to Chantale was such a stress reliever.

The focus of design, in the new and expanded kitchen with all the latest amenities, and in the innovative bathroom complete with custom shower with window and hidden stacked full sized washer and dryer, proved to be beyond our hopes. There is a place for everything and everything is a reflection of us.

It proved to be a wonderful experience working with Chantale throughout the journey from concept to finished cottage. The comfort we now experience at our cottage is incredible, this custom renovation was well worth it.

When we purchased our home in Ottawa, our excitement quickly turned to feeling overwhelmed because of the amount of work it needed before it could feel like our home. We needed to update the entire home as everything was original (from the 60s!). We just didn’t know where to begin. Then, we discovered Chantale at Studio 853! Her ideas on how to make our spaces beautiful and functional blew us away! She really made sure to stay true to the home by enhancing existing features and incorporating them into a fresh, stylish, sophisticated look. Her and her team where able to provide a 3-D depiction of what the house will look like – this helped so much in being able to see her vision. We could not be happier with the results and with the relationship we built. Chantale was always available to answer any design questions our contractors had – with an older home, there are always surprises and Chantale offered amazing guidance to make it work. We can’t emphasize enough how amazing she made our home look and we look forward to having her design the landscape and back yard.

We began the process of building our home last year. Site clearing complete, permits pulled and floor plan selected, our vision was to do as much of this as we could ourselves. Recognizing a need for an expert in the area of design to tie our vision together we were referred to Studio 853 by a reputable builder. From their initial greeting (over email) to our face to face meeting we knew we found the right firm to bring our vision together. Chantale is passionate, dedicated and experienced. Chantale is a professional and a far cry from your typical "recent college grad in home design", "go check out Housz" and Pinterest expert, Chantale takes the time to get to know you, your vision, your hopes. With experience in markets outside Ottawa (thankfully) her perspective is wide open. Chantale never imposed a vision, never asked us to "see it her way", Chantale is an expert and making YOUR home YOUR way. Chantale has a knack for fostering the creative process. All that said made it very difficult to ultimately choose a different direction in actually bringing our concept to design. I have no doubt had we retained Studio 853 to do the design and help us through the building process we would have had one heck of a house. The decision was not at all a result of factors in Studio 853's control, we selected a different builder (a husband and wife team), where one design and one builds. At this high calibre, top notch and quality level where Studio 853 operates it makes it very difficult to pick one firm over another. Our decision was based on a recent project undertaken by the builder we selected and again was totally outside the control of Studio 853. I have no hesitation is recommending this firm and Chantale for any future project, when landscaping times comes (in a couple years) I know who I will be calling. Do not hesitate to consider Studio 853 for your design needs, they will blow you away.
