Through a series of serendipitous events, my wife, Betty, published a book, Up in the Air, about her life starting in war torn London and leading to her career as a flight attendant with PanAm. Following various book signings, she learned that reading snippets from the book, some of the attendees, remarked on how her English accent helped characterize the book. Consequently, after learning how audiobooks were a significant part of contemporary book markets, we decided to create an audiobook version of her printed editions with Betty as the narrator. Well, we are in our mid 80’s and while we use various forms of contemporary technology, we were clueless in how to produce an audiobook let alone how Betty could become a viable narrator. We, of course, turned to the internet and after some research, discovered Jony’s studio. We contacted him, were able to have a zoom conversation with him and despite the fact that he was in Toronto and we are in southeastern Pennsylvania, we quickly became comfortable with him and completed our agreement with him.
He immediately began by explaining the process all in obviously knowledgeable and personable language that we could understand. He began by explaining that it was not effective to come to his studio to do the process given the time and demands of the narration process, instead, urging that we produce it in our home. He began by directing us to the online software to be used, the specific microphone and accessory to purchase and how to set up a “studio” in our home. Since he explained that we should not do the narration in a room with hard surfaces because of the echo impact, we used small clothes closet as the studio.
Then, again through a serendipitous contact with a friend, we discovered a local individual who is an accomplished audiobook narrator and engaged him to be Betty’s “coach” during the process. To the credit of both individuals, Jony and Will, comfortably began working with each other, with Jony showing his flexibility and skill in producing the results of Betty’s narration.
Finally, when we completed the narration process, Jony was extremely helpful in explaining the nature of the business of marketing and selling an audiobook and the differences between going exclusively with Amazon’s Audible and other options. With the benefit of his guidance, we went with the Audible exclusive and Jony arranged a zoom session with us to walk us through the process of signing on with Audible; an unbelievably complex process that we question whether we could have done on our own.
So, bottom line is this very special man, Jony, made it possible for us as amateurs, to successfully produce an audiobook from our home and make what at the outset seemed an incredibly daunting task, a delightful, easy and successful experience.
