I had high expectations for MakerLabs, especially after reading all the positive reviews. Unfortunately my experience was not at all what I'd been led to believe it would be.

I chose them to engrave a handmade (by me) leather wallet for my partner's birthday, featuring an oak tree that holds personal significance. I spent time researching trustworthy businesses, and despite some initial concerns about pricing and turnaround times, MakerLabs promised to complete the job within two weeks for a $50 upfront fee. Their prompt responses and glowing reviews reassured me that the engraving would exceed my expectations.

The morning after dropping off my wallet, I received an email from MakerLabs containing a photo of my wallet with a 2-inch scratched area on the surface. The email mentioned, without an apology, that a piece of tape used to mark the engraving location had torn off some of the varnish. They claimed that the engraving would cover the blemish, but given the intricate design of the oak tree with its branches and negative space, I knew that it would be impossible to conceal completely.

I expressed my disappointment, explaining that this was a one-of-a-kind, handmade gift and that I trusted them to handle it with care. Instead of addressing my concerns or apologizing, their response merely stated that they would 'polish the area with mink oil' and adjust the design orientation to cover the scratch. No apology was offered, nor was there any attempt to provide a refund or a more satisfactory solution. Of course, they weren't required to accept any responsibility in case of damage — at least, that's what the invoice I signed said when I paid upfront. However, that doesn't excuse the lack of a sincere, human apology.

While mistakes can happen and I do not blame the employee who made it, I do blame MakerLabs for a lack of proper training for employees on handling delicate, engravable materials. The final product is acceptable, but the blemish remains visible, and I’m left feeling frustrated and disappointed with how MakerLabs handled the situation. I hope they take this feedback to heart and improve their customer care for future projects.

We first encountered MakerLabs several years ago during an East Van Cultural Crawl. We were amazed at the facility and the equipment they have for artists and craftsmen.
After ordering an Hinoki plank from Japan, MakerLabs was my choice to mill a bath tub tray I had designed.
The price was reasonable and turn around was just a week. Workmanship was incredible. A big bonus was their ability to laser etch a kanji phrase on the front edge.
